No surprises so far. I like the front end, though I think I prefer the Mk7's flatter, more upright C-pillar and the 7.5's LED accents . Full reveal plus interior happening tomorrow.

I love that they kept the front end, mostly. I absolutely hate the new VW corporate grille, so it’s good to see Golf getting differentiation.
Honestly when I read your title, I thought “Already leaking?!”

I’m i mpressed you kept a Mk4 on the road that long, especially since it wasn’t a TDI.

I currently drive an 03 Odyssey with 208k miles on it. Granted, it’s on its second engine and transmission, but you can see that I like to keep my cars. I really miss that Golf, though.

I know this sounds silly, but the mat front end looks much more Jetta than Golf to me

It’s functional yet attractive, without trying to cop an attitude. I’m no fan of most of the modern design trends. Too many sharp corners and angry faces.

This continues to be a car (along with the Jetta) that I simply don’t understand. For what you get, they’re expensive. The interiors since the mk6 have been awful. The lower spec trims don’t drive very well. They have high repair and maintenance costs.
Every time I rent one, I just think: WHY DO YOU EXIST, GERMAN CHEVY CRUZE?

We wrote “leaky gaskets” into Germany’s constitution after Nuremburg. We had to ensure they’d never dominate anything except the headspace of their fanbois ever again ;)

The thin grille is something of a Golf signature, so it gets to sit out the gaping maw trend, thankf ully. Be glad we didn’t end up with this:

At least it’s not a chrome razor blade. Those just seem so out of place on something like a base model Jetta. It’s like Ford from 10 years ago.

That was high school for me. The skinny jeans stuck the eyeliner not so much. Mostly because I don’t have girls to put it on for me, it’s hard by yourself

Try tinted lip balm/gloss instead. It’s subtle and it works better for my complexion (as compared to eyeliner)

I like it, but not as much as the mk7.5. It usually takes me until the end of the chassis run for me to properly appreciate a car, haha.
I do hate the directional wheels that have become standard on the GTI, however that is an easy fix and there are sooooooooooooooo many wheels that look great.

Wat? The golf/GTI interior shits on anything that it competes with...Are you trying to tell me that there is something “ domestic” , Japanese or even Korean that is nicer in the same price bracket?
My 2013 base Jetta (a car I hated) had a nicer interior than my Wife’s 2017 Forester.
I’ll agree about the drive in the base FWD cars. Howe ver the GTI and Haldex cars are fantastic!
Jettas are also available one spec down from base to rental companies.

Agree to disagree I guess. It’s a conservative design, but the ergonomics are spot on and the materials are better than anything else in the class except maybe the new Mazda3. As far as tech goes it’s not really missing anything, the touchscreen is a good size and it’s not too button-heavy . The Mk8 is going all out with touchscreens, even for the climate controls, and I’m not sure how well that’s going to work out.

Let me clarify - the new interior design is great.
My complain is with the old interior design that remained unchanged for many many many years.
No complains about the ergonomics or materials.

The front end looks like it crashed into a wa ll - all shmoosed up.
So much for their recent good designs.
Maybe it will look better in-person?

Go in sit in that, then in a new Mazda3. It’s not even close. Not to mention every button and switch in that Golf feels like Chin esium - not German craftsmanship. Press photos do a good job of covering up how bad those plastics are.

Yeah, my comments were about the old interior. The new one is more updated but I’m not sure how I feel about it yet, especially now that we can see it in detail:

I have a 2018 GTI, so I’m pretty familiar with it. Nothing about it feels like “chinesium” other than maybe the fabric sunroof shade. While I agree the 3 is a bit nicer, the Golf is still leagues ahead of anything else in the class, and 2nd best is a long way from “awful”.
Now the Jetta, that’s a different story. It omits a lot of the little touches that make the Golf feel special, so it’s got about the quality you’d expect for the price and nothing more.

T qualify my statement a bit, my judgement on the interior is from a rental Jetta and two base manual European golfs.
